Alice Elstner was born in East Berlin in 1978. While still at school, she gained practical theatre experience at the Volksbühne (P14) and the Theater an der Schönhauser. She knew from an early age that she wanted to become a radio play director. After finishing her A-levels, she moved to Vienna where she studied theatre, film and media studies, philosophy, German language and literature, and journalism, during which time she directed her first radio plays for the ORF. In the following years, she worked as a radio play and feature director as well as an adaptor for the ORF and German public broadcasters (NDR, DLR, RBB, SWR). The focal point of her work is the phenomenon of the human voice. Her radio work has twice been named Radio Play of the Year and has received the Adult Education Media Prize.
