Ivan Strelkin was born in St Petersburg, Russia, in 1988. In 2010, he completed his BA in Acting and Directing at the State Theatre Academy in his home city. From his graduation until 2013, he pursued the path of a freelance director, resulting in 11 full-length productions in various cities across Russia. In 2013, he was invited to join the Vene Teater (Tallinn, Estonia) as resident director, where he spent the following three years. In 2016, deciding to broaden his artistic horizons, he moved to Essen (Germany) and began dancing. In 2019, he completed an MA in Choreography at the Folkwang University of the Arts, while creating several performances in Bochum, Luxembourg, Lecce, Montepulciano, among others. Feeling the need to direct his energy towards academic work, in 2019 he enrolled in another MA programme – „Movement Research“ at the Anton Bruckner Private University in Linz (Austria). He graduated from ABPU with his master's thesis „Echoing choreographies“, founded the art collective „Flirty Horse“ (together with Kasija Vrbanac) and moved to Vienna, where he currently lives and works as a freelance director and writer.
Ivan’s most recent works include „When Trees Were Tall“ (2024), an interdisciplinary music project supported by the City of Vienna and presented at several venues across Vienna, and „Die Düntzer Rhapsodie“ (2025), a theatre production at Theater Drachengasse (the concept for „Düntzer Rhapsodie“ won the Audience Award at the 2024 Drachengasse Newcomer Competition). In addition, Ivan has recently been active as a writer – his play „Souvenirs“ was nominated for the Retzhofer Preis.
