Monika Meister studied theatre studies, ethnology and philosophy at the University of Vienna, where she also received her assistantship at the Department of Theatre Studies shortly after completing her studies. She has been a university lecturer since 1992 and received her venia docendi for theatre studies (title of her postdoctoral thesis: Purgatorium – Katharsis – Subversion. Zur Geschichte einer Theorie des Theaters im 19. und 20. Jahrhundert [Purgatory – Catharsis – Subversion: On the History of a Theory of Theatre in the 19th and 20th Centuries]). From 2004 to 2010, she was Head of the Department of Theatre, Film and Media Studies at the University of Vienna.

Furthermore, she holds teaching assignments at various universities and has also been the deputy head of the Elfriede Jelinek Research Platform: Texts – Contexts – Reception since 2013.

Significant for my teaching is …
... the intention to impart the history and present of theatre and theatre theory to the students. Within this framework, the aim is to develop a critical perspective that recognises the ambivalences of text and body, of language and speech, of representation and presence, as well as the social and aesthetic significance of theatre.
